I watch this film a couple times a year and never get sick of it. I highly highly recommend checking it out. I don't use the word brilliant lightly. The dialogue was beyond witty, it was absolutely delightful: crisp, poignant, telling and moving the story along in such a lyrical, novel-esque manner. It really was like the best of both worlds: reading a novel and watching a movie at the same time. It had the imaginative quality one employs when reading, as well as the perfectly acted roles, in which the actors truly embody the essence of their quirky characters Dustin Hoffman's character was amazing!
How ingenious that a literary professor would help Will Farrell's character get to the bottom of the voice he is hearing far better and in a far more entertaining manner than a psychologist.
He must have had such fun playing that role, he is perfect for it. His wisdom and insight as the Professor was both heartfelt and powerful. Emma Thompson is a powerhouse in this film, bringing Karen Eiffel to life as a flawed and abrasive woman first dealing with writers block, then dealing with the impossible situation and decision of the existence of Harold. Maggie Gyllenhaal does a fantastic portrayal of the intelligent, independent, quirky baker who is stranger than fiction movie mp4 download over with kind gestures and delightful awkwardness of the main character; there is a moment where Ana watches Harold play the guitar and it feels like she is looking into his soul, weighing who he is as a person, and find that she is pleasantly surprised at what she discovers.
Dustin Hoffman is so incredibly believable as the professor of literature that I felt like I could have taken his class in college, but it's the fact that he has a different set of values than Harold that makes their interactions so amazing. Even Queen Latifah does well as the underappreciated assistant who is just trying to figure out the best way to support Karren.
The story is unique, yet makes delightful literary references to the standard tropes and pays homage to what has come before. The writing is lyrical, witty, honest, and full of dry humor, leaving me with an intense desire to read the books by the character Karen Eiffel. Overall, this is the best written movie I have ever seen due to the imagery in the words matching the imagery in the visual medium in a magical way that transports the viewer into the movie the way a great book transports the reader into the world, the wonderfully handled inherent awkwardness of the concept of the fantastical intruding on the ordinary, and the dialog that has you crying from laughing so hard and crying from the tragedy of the sacrifice.
The music is perfect at emphasizing the moments of love, awkwardness, joy, discovery, sacrifice, and heartbreak. You know that it's a good soundtrack when you don't even notice the music because it helps heighten the emotions of the scene rather than distract from them.
The special effects are impeccably done to highlight the story and the characters, helping to establish the underlying nature of the main character's neurotic counting as well as instilling a sense of whimsy, as seen in the subtle shifting of the clouds behind Harold in the HR office as he thinks about Ana. It's easy to suspend disbelief in this movie because all of the characters feel like real people, so even though the core concept is fantastical, it feels plausible.
